Flying from Alesund to Oslo this morning, August 10th, 2022, we caught a Norwegian Air flight from Alesund to Oslo, which took approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. We paid 750 NOK (75 USD) for our one-way ticket, but prices can vary between 500 and 1,500 NOK (50 to 150 USD) depending on the booking time and availability. Since the airport is a bit far from downtown, we opted to stay nearby, as my dad had an early flight and my brother and I had a later one. We’re heading back through Iceland, while my dad will travel via Amsterdam.
To travel from Oslo Gardermoen Airport to downtown, we took the Flytoget Airport Express Train. Covering 50 kilometers (31 miles), the journey took around 20 minutes, with tickets costing 210 to 220 NOK (20 to 22 USD) each. Trains are frequent and provide a swift connection to the city center.
Our first stop was the Oslo Cathedral (Oslo Domkirke), a historic church located in Oslo’s heart. Built in the late 17th century and renovated in the 19th, it serves as the city’s main church and the seat of the Bishop of Oslo.

A short walk led us to the Royal Palace, completed in 1849 and the official residence of the Norwegian monarch. Surrounded by Slottsparken, the palace is nestled in a lush park with manicured lawns, walking paths, and a variety of flora.

Post-lunch, we strolled to Aker Brygge, Oslo’s vibrant waterfront district. Once an industrial dock, it has been transformed into a lively hub with shops, restaurants, and cultural venues. Enjoy scenic fjord views, a promenade walk, and explore local dining and entertainment options. Aker Brygge is also home to the Nobel Peace Center and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art.

Our final stop was the Oslo Opera House, a modern architectural gem opened in 2008. Designed by Snøhetta, its striking white marble and glass facade resembles a glacier. The sloping roof offers panoramic city and fjord views. The opera house hosts the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and the Red Bull Diving competition was taking place outside, adding a unique touch to our visit.

Although we missed the Viking Museum, which I now regret, Oslo has been a memorable experience. If you’re considering a layover or a one-day stopover, I’d definitely recommend it. Our trip concludes as we head back to the States tomorrow, with a summer trip to Spain and Portugal planned for 2023. Cheers!
