Using our burner day to do something fun, we left Litochoro and drove an hour northeast to Thessaloniki. My mate Matt who is from Greece recommended visiting this city and claimed it as the “Better, Newer, Athens”.
This was by far the easiest drive of the trip, all flat freeway, but not very scenic. As I was driving I realized that I was going to have to park in the city which was going to be a nightmare, and I was right. It took me and my brother about 30 minutes to find a spot on the street. Free parking was all but impossible but eventually, I found paid street parking. Technically I found this about 5 minutes in, but I couldn’t translate the sign and had no idea I could park there haha.
Day 1 – Walk Around the City 07.06.2021
Not too sure what we were going to do for the day we looked up popular scenic spots in the city. The car was over 1.5km from the city center so we had a bit of walking to do. The first stop was the White Tower of Thessaloniki. You can go to the top of this, but we chose not to.
The next stop was to visit the Arch of Galerius. Walking to St. George Square, which is where the Arch is located, we passed a lot of ancient Roman sites. I didn’t catch the name of them and I can’t even find them on google maps since it’s a pedestrian-only way, but they’re there and cool. You can even walk through them, however on Tuesday’s they are closed which was bad luck for us.
The last thing to see was the Rotunda, which is a circular Roman temple with mosaics. Another lesson learned on making plans by the minute, this was also closed because it was Tuesday so we were only able to get photos outside.
Not my best post, but some good takeaways, if you ever go to Thessaloniki and you want to see some Ancient Roman sites, don’t go on Tuesday.
Back to Litochoro for canyoning tomorrow!
