The last time I was in Vatican City was back in 2018, when I explored the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Square. While these were unforgettable experiences, I couldn’t visit St. Peter’s Basilica, which had been high on my list for a long time. So, on this trip, I was thrilled to finally check it off!
Visiting during the summer of COVID had its perks—Vatican City was surprisingly empty, allowing for a more intimate experience. As Oron and I made our way from Rome, entering the city-state offered us a breathtaking view of St. Peter’s Square. Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century, the vast open space is encircled by majestic colonnades and adorned with beautiful fountains. The square is like a grand entrance to the basilica, with its awe-inspiring facade featuring statues of the apostles that seem to welcome visitors from around the world.

Walking into St. Peter’s Basilica is truly a humbling experience. The sheer size of the place is overwhelming, and the intricate details of its architecture and lavish decorations captivate every visitor. Designed by some of history’s greatest architects, including Michelangelo, Bernini, and Bramante, the basilica’s interior stands as a stunning example of Renaissance artistry.

Tip: Entrance to the basilica itself is free, but there are fees for climbing the dome or visiting the Vatican Necropolis. If you’re planning on climbing the dome, there are two options: take the elevator partway, followed by climbing 320 steps (€10), or challenge yourself to the full 551-step climb (€8). Note that a strict dress code is enforced, requiring shoulders and knees to be covered. It’s essential to dress modestly since the basilica is a place of worship.
If you’re looking for breathtaking views of Rome and Vatican City, climbing to the top of the dome is a must. The climb is a bit intense, especially as you get closer to the top where the walls narrow and the ceiling starts to shrink. It can feel quite claustrophobic, but once you reach the summit, the panoramic vistas are absolutely worth it. The view from the top is nothing short of spectacular, offering a bird’s-eye view of the Vatican and the sprawling cityscape of Rome beyond.

This visit was a dream come true for me, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to experience St. Peter’s Basilica in such a unique way. If you ever find yourself in Vatican City, don’t miss the chance to explore this architectural marvel—it’s an experience you’ll cherish forever.
Cheers!
