On July 30th, 2022, we headed to Limerick for a brief overnight stay. We took the train operated by Irish Rail, which comfortably covered the 100 kilometers (62 miles) in about 2 hours and 30 minutes, with ticket prices ranging from €20 to €30 for a one-way journey.
Though Limerick wasn’t initially on my travel list, I wanted to explore one more city beyond Cork and Dublin. Limerick was a natural choice as my sister’s undergraduate school is located here, and friends from university recommended it as a charming place to visit.

Our main attraction for the day was King John’s Castle, a 13th-century fortress on the River Shannon. The castle, built by King John of England around 1200, offers panoramic views and interactive exhibits about its history. Entry costs €15, which includes access to the museum.

Just a short walk from the castle is St. Mary’s Cathedral, a medieval gem dating back to 1168. The cathedral features a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, with impressive stone walls and a collection of historical artifacts inside.

After our brief exploration, we’re catching the train back to Dublin this evening to tour the city and enjoy a round of golf. Cheers!
