ahoyne9After an evening in Limerick on July 30th, 2022, we boarded the train to Dublin. The journey, covering approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles), took about 2 hours and 30 minutes, with ticket prices ranging from €25 to €35.
On July 31st, we checked off a bucket list item for my dad: golfing in Ireland. Powerscourt Golf Club in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, is just 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Dublin. A taxi ride takes about 40 to 50 minutes and costs between €60 and €80. The club features two beautiful 18-hole courses, with green fees from €100 to €150 and twilight rates from €60 to €80. Club rentals cost around €30 to €40.Despite my usual indifference to golf, the challenging rough and deep bunkers made it a memorable experience.
On the way back I tried several times to book a taxi and no one wanted to come out to the course, so a return ride should be planned in advanced. As we were standing outside a local man and his wife offered to drop us back off in Dublin. This might have been probably the nicest hospitality I’ve received traveling abroad.
On August 1st, before heading to Glasgow, we visited the Guinness Storehouse. The €26 tour, lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, offers an immersive look into Guinness’s history and brewing process. Highlights include interactive exhibits and a visit to the Gravity Bar, where you can enjoy a complimentary pint of Guinness with panoramic city views. It was an exceptional experience, possibly the best beer tour I’ve ever had!
One last interesting fact, in 1759, Arthur Guinness signed a lease for the St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin. The lease was for 9,000 years, starting from the date of the lease, which was 31 December 1759.The annual rent for this lease was £45, which is remarkably low considering the length of the lease.
