On August 3rd, 2022, we embarked on a scenic train journey from Glasgow to London, choosing the train over flying for its comfort and the opportunity to enjoy the picturesque British countryside. The 640-kilometer (400-mile) trip, taking about 4.5 to 5.5 hours, is operated by Avanti West Coast with frequent direct services. Trains depart from Glasgow Central Station and arrive at London Euston Station, with ticket prices ranging from ÂŁ30 to ÂŁ100 one-way. For added luxury, first-class tickets offer extra space and amenities.

Upon arriving in London in the afternoon, we explored the city, including iconic sites like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and Tower Bridge. Though I missed my chance to ascend Tower Bridge, it’s a good excuse to plan another visit.

Our next adventure took us to Nuthampstead, near Royston, where my grandfather was stationed during WWII. We took a train from London to Royston, then a taxi to Nuthampstead, a journey of about 45 minutes to 1 hour and covering approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles). The train tickets cost between ÂŁ15 and ÂŁ30 one-way.

In Nuthampstead, we visited The Woodman Inn, a historic bar and hotel located on the site of the former American bomber base at Scales Park. Established in 1942, the base housed Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters and B-17 bombers before closing in 1959. Exploring this historic location provided a unique connection to my grandfather’s past, as he piloted B-17 bombers during the war.

Next stop: Alesund, Norway! Cheers!
