Today, August 1st, 2022 marked the beginning of a new adventure as we left Dublin and boarded my first ever propeller plane to Glasgow. Opting for Glasgow over Edinburgh proved to be a budget-friendly choice, with the flight costing €60 on Aer Lingus and the journey taking about an hour and a half. Though our flight was delayed and we didn’t touch down until around 8:30 PM, the cost savings were a bonus.
After checking into our Airbnb, I reunited with my friend Arpine, whom I had met while living in New Zealand. We explored a few local bars, The Raven and Wunderbar. Being a Monday night, the atmosphere was rather subdued, but it was great catching up.

The next morning, August 2nd, 2022 we boarded a train to Edinburgh, which proved to be an efficient and scenic trip. The journey, covering the 80-kilometer (50-mile) distance, took around 45 minutes to 1 hour. ScotRail operates frequent trains, departing every 15 to 30 minutes from Glasgow Queen Street and arriving at Edinburgh Waverley. Ticket prices range from £10 to £30 depending on the time and how far in advance you book.
Upon arrival in Edinburgh, our first destination was the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, we could only purchase advance tickets, and I was ready to explore more of the city rather than visit another castle. However, the castle’s exterior is still a stunning sight. For those interested, entry costs £20.00, and a tour typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

Next, we strolled down Victoria Street, a favorite Instagram spot known for its colorful, picturesque buildings and charming layout. This vibrant street in Edinburgh’s Old Town is lined with quirky shops, cafes, and restaurants, perfect for capturing beautiful photos.

We then visited the Scott Monument, a Gothic spire dedicated to Sir Walter Scott, one of Scotland’s most celebrated writers. The monument stands tall at 61 meters (200 feet) and offers an impressive view of the city.

Our final stop in Edinburgh was Calton Hill, renowned for its panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes. It was a perfect way to end our day before heading back to Glasgow.

Tomorrow, we’ll catch the train to London. Cheers!
